The single most important reason for shooting your own action images is to bring back the emotion of being there in the moment.

We are highly visual creatures and life is often summed up in snapshots of highs and lows. You can trigger the memory of an event with all sorts of stimuli, a sound, a scent, a picture can all replay that peak moment.

Great images can encapsulate the moment even better than video because they don’t run – they take a fraction of a second and that fraction becomes the whole. Like that great Magnum photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson said, it’s the Decisive Moment.

To me, this is a work of art. It satisfies the aesthetic in form and colour and it beautifully encapsulates a moment of action in wind and water and sun.

I love this shot by Erwan Jauffroy.
