birth of the self-film revolution
Flymount was there at the very beginning.
Before vlogging, before creators, before “content” was even a word people used - there was an idea: what if you could film yourself?
When waterproof compact cameras first appeared, we built the first action camera mount, launching at the same time as YouTube and Facebook - back when filming yourself felt strange, unnecessary, even ridiculous. One friend summed up the general opinion perfectly:
“Why would anyone want to film themselves? What a stupid idea!”
But we saw something different.
We saw people wanting to tell their own stories. To capture moments from their own point of view. To share experiences as they actually lived them - not staged, not filtered, just real.
Flymount was built for that future - before the world knew it wanted it.
tarifa 2006
In 2006 windsurfing consumed my life and everything I did revolved around it. I was living in Tarifa and had purchased one of the first waterproof digital cameras. Its compact size and low weight made it perfect for attaching to my windsurf kit, allowing me to film myself on the water.
Initially, I used masses of gaffa tape for this purpose, but it worked and the results were incredible! Up until that point you would have needed an expensive bullet cam and power source with home made waterproof casings, which would have been cumbersome, difficult to use and extremely expensive.
At the time, I was sailing with a group of friends and we’d attach this tiny camera to our rigs, letting it record us. And then in the evenings, we’d plug it into a TV and watch the footage together. The simple pleasure of watching this footage back over a beer in the evening is difficult to explain to someone unfamiliar with these sports but it’s truly special.
2006 -2007
In early 2006, I met my wife and we settled into a little village up the coast from Tarifa.
Having begun making camera mounts to replace the gaffa tape I’d been using with my waterproof camera, other sailors started asking if we could make mounts for them.
A demand existed but no suitable product was available so we began developing a business around our camera mounts.
2008 to now
Designing the original full-production Flymount began in 2008 but it took another year and a half of testing and re-designing until we were completely happy with it.
Around this time, we began hearing about YouTube and Facebook. These platforms allowed people to share their images and videos in a way that had previously been impossible. GoPro cameras also began to appear, leading to a boom in the action camera market.
We’re incredibly fortunate to have been there at the start and still be here now. It’s been an amazing journey and continues to be. As Ziggy Marley says, “We’re on a ride that never stops.”
